week review: Cards & the j-o-b

Its been a busy week around here... and I'm anxiously awaiting the weekend! Monday started off as a holiday, unannounced to me, tons of people took off work to celebrate the Cardinals home opener in the new Busch Stadium. I heard happy hour started at 10am if you weren't working. At least Barnes Jewish decorated the cafeteria and handed out free Cardinals cake!
For the rest of the week I've finishing up detailed competancies for my job and beginning to finally get my own caseload of patients. Tomorrow I start practicing the endoscopic swallowing evaluation- means I get to pass a camera tube up and through the nose, halfway down the throat and evaluate as they swallow food and drink. Sounds fun, right? I'm all excited, except my first guine-pig has to be on a normal person and is none other than my supervisor. I'm hoping to still have my job by friday.
Didn't expect this would be so different from the hospital I worked at in Memphis, but being in an academic setting means therapists here are very nice, but in the over-acheiver category. My coworkers recite the latest research, are participating in studies, serving on state boards, writing for rehab journals, and in the meantime probably read the New England Journal of Medicine. Luckily this is not all in my job decription, but I've had several nights this last week to study and "catch up". Finally beginning to utalize my $ master's level education now. woo.
This weekend I'm chilling out, catching up, and celebrating Easter, and chilling out some more. Hope you do the same!

The irony in your blog post is that in discussing your master's education, you used a word that doesn't even exist. Are they inventing words at your research hospital? Or do they utilize(!) Webster's wonderful dictionary? If I find that they utalize something else, then I will have to come and check this place out.

U-tal-ize (v.) To put to use the slopes of Utah.

Usage: Hannah really Uta-lized when she went on her trip over a year ago. So much that she almost did not get to experience sticking things up the booger shoot of her boss.

(This was long and sarcastic! Have a good day. Just kidding with you.)

You can do it, Han! You are an over-achiever yourself, so you will be GREAT! It might make the days go by even faster if you're staying really busy. Get ready to chill out this weekend and eat some Easter candy! YUM! Love you!!! Hang in there!

I definitely like the way we do swallow studies at the children's hospital where I work. For babies, barium is mixed in their bottles with thin and thick formula and then in cereal, with the babies sitting behind the fluroscope screen. Pretty much the same with kids, except the barium is mixed in their cups and in food.

I don't think I could eat or drink with a camera up my nose...LOL

Oh boy, I love comments!

#1. Dear Matthew. You have forgotten, I grew up in Webster. Therefore I feel exempt from using the book. Or maybe I just mispell on purpose so I can come down to the level of my law student friends who have their girlfriends type up their papers. what love! ;)

#2. Becky thanks for the cheer. Your pics on your blog today are too cute! Spencer & Abbey need to play together again- maybe their aunties can take them out!

#3. Julie & the boys...allright! Love to see you guys this weekend. :)

#4. Jenn- Oh I know you can identify. I get to see you in what, 2 weeks? yippee!

#5. I didn't know I had a speech path reader on my blog! Just for you, my modified barium swallow guy set a record. Not only did he have silent aspiration but barium shot out of his nose at the same time! Now that's a case for me. I'd love to know where you work too!

Not a speech pathologist, but I am a pediatric RN. I sort of stumbled across your blog a few months ago. I used to live in St. Louis and worked at number of area hospitals during my time there, both as agency and staff. I never worked at Barnes however, but having worked at a number of teaching institutions I understand what you are saying about the competition, it is unbelievable. I was a travel nurse and have worked at more than my fair share of hospitals and I have seen the competition phenomena all over the country. I am not sure I understand as I just want to go to work and take care of my kids.

BTW, I work nights because I can't wake up and get to work by 7 AM!
